“If saving money is wrong, I don’t want to be right!”

William Shatner

All too often the rainy day arrives before we’ve started our nest egg… We keep thinking: next month I must start saving, or once I’ve cleared this credit card debt we will open a savings account! If you want to give yourself an awesome gift – then start saving today! Not only is it a solid foundational budgeting principle but it also feels great! Even if it’s R100 this week, you will begin to feel empowered around your finances!

Every workshop, every coaching session and every training seminar that I’ve ever presented has always rested on this principle: financial planning is the key to financial abundance. If you want to begin your design for abundance, then you have to, have to, have to start with a plan. Whether you want to increase your savings, purchase income-generating assets or invest in your health, you can cover all of these things in your budget.
Perhaps you’re intimidated by the word ‘budget’ because it has always had negative connotations and every time you have tried to budget you’ve felt that your budget has not worked, so you stop and don’t try again.
One of the reasons why many budgets fail is because they are not set up correctly to you and your needs, wants and dreams. In my workshops we address this starting block by creating your ideal spending plan. Remember, it’s your ideal spending plan, which means you don’t have to get it right this month, or next, or even in the next 12 – as long as it charts the course for your abundance journey!
The first step in saving is to include it in your ideal spending plan. Turn this stumbling block into your starting block!

The next step is to start small. If you are currently not saving any money, then whatever your figure is that you begin with, it will feel like a lot of money. To make this transition achievable and sustainable, I always suggest that you start small, with a plan to grow it. I have helped hundreds of clients move to a place in their budget where they are saving up to 40% of their income! Sound impossible? Well… with the proper guidance, planning and mentoring, it is definitely possible!
Start with as little as R100 a week and keep it there for the month. Before you realize it, you would have saved almost R500 in one month! In a year that’s R6000. Imagine what you could do with that? Christmas gifts, pamper treatments, new garden furniture, a new television, some great kitchen appliances, a new wardrobe…. the list is literally endless!

Your worst enemy is tomorrow. Ellen DeGeneres once said: ‘Procrastinate now, don’t put it off…”
When it comes to creating new habits, the sooner you start, the better. Saving is a financial habit that will help you design the abundant life that you dream of. But here’s the kicker to living in abundance: it can start today. You don’t have to wait until you have a certain amount of money in your bank account. You don’t have to wait until all of your debt is cleared. You can choose to live in abundance, today!
